Dangerous Good Classifications
Dangerous Good Classifications-1

CLASS 1 – EXPLOSIVES

Their stowage should be made at a point far from personnel location and the hull, just beneath hatches.

Includes the following :
Black powder, cartridge, smoke bomb, ammunition, dynamite etc.

CLASS 2 – GASES

CLASS 2.1

FLAMMABLE GAS : They should be stowed out of reach of any heat source and far from personnel location.

Includes the following :
Acetylene, Ethane, Ethylene, Methane, Hydrogen, Butane etc.

CLASS 2.2

TOXIC GAS : They should be stowed far from any heat source, personnel location and foodstuff.

Includes the following :
Ammonia, Fluorine, Prussic Acid, Chlorite, Carbon monoxide etc.

CLASS 2.3

NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GAS : They should be kept on or beneath the deck, in well-ventilated cool locations. Tubes filled with these gases expand upon heat extraction and become very hazardous since this may lead to explosion.

Includes the following :
Argon, Helium, carbon dioxide, Coal gas, oxygen etc.

CLASS 3 – FLAMMABLE LIQUID

They are divided in 3 groups depending on the burning point of evaporating gas upon heating.

CLASS 3.1

GASOLINE : Burning point less than 180°C. Should always be stored above the deck.

CLASS 3.2

DIESEL : Burning point between 180 and 230°C. Should be stored above or beneath the deck.

CLASS 3.3

DIESEL : Burning point between 230 and 610°C. Should be stored under the deck.

CLASS 4 – GASES

CLASS 4.1

FLAMMABLE SOLID : Should be stored above or beneath the deck. Should be kept away from living spaces.

Includes the following :
Aluminum powder, celluloid, naphthalene, red phosphorus, films, oil of turpentine, dry fibers etc.

CLASS 4.2

SPONTENOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE : Should be stored at well-ventilated locations; the clearance between stows should be designed so as to ensure air circulation

Includes the following :
Copra, fishmeal, fodder, charcoal etc.

CLASS 4.3

DANGEROUS WHEN WET : Solids which are flammable when they contact water or get wet. They should be stored in dry, well-ventilated spaces; any contact with water should be avoided.

Includes the following :
Alkaline alloys, barium, carbide, ferrosilicon, natrium, magnesium etc.

CLASS 5 – OXIDIZİNG SUBSTANCES

CLASS 5.1

OXIDIZING AGENT : These agents liberate oxygen and thus facilitate inflammation. Therefore, they should not be stored together with flammable substances.

Includes the following :
Nitrate, fertilizer, ammonium sulfate, barium chlorate etc.

CLASS 5.2

ORGANIC PEROXIDE : These substances can be either flammable or explosive. They should be stored above the deck, with a cover, in dry and cool conditions.

Includes the following :
All peroxides are in this group.

CLASS 6 – TOXIC

CLASS 6.1

TOXIC : Toxic substances may enter human body through mouth and kill the person. Therefore, they should be stored far from foodstuff, beverage, living spaces and moisture-spreading materials, such as tobacco.

Includes the following :
Arsenic, Aniline, Barium oxide, Phenol, Nicotine, Lead, Cyanide, mercury products etc.

CLASS 6.2

INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE : These substances cause illness due to their microbe content. They should be stored far from food, beverage and living spaces. Contact the nearest health authority in case of danger.

Includes the following :
Bone, bone oil, compressed meat wastes, hides, blood meal etc.

CLASS 7 – RADIOACTIVE

These substances are transported in special containers. They containers should be undamaged. Preferably, they should be stored over the deck, far from personnel space, foodstuff, undeveloped films, medications and chemicals. They are divided in 3 groups depending on degree of activity.

  • CLASS 7.1

  • CLASS 7.2

  • CLASS 7.3
